Pellet Stove Checklist – Considerations when Selecting a Pellet Stove

Pellet Stove InstallationsPellet stoves are remarkably efficient and generate automated wood-fired heat for the home. Minimal combustion materials are emitted from a pellet stove, making the appliance earth-friendly. Pellet stoves can produce sufficient heat for a large area of the home. In fact, central heating systems can be periodically shut off while you stay toasty warm during the coldest days of winter.

Wood waste is used to form highly compressed wood pellets for use in pellet stoves. The pellets are poured into a hopper and automatically fed into a burn pot. The innovative, hands-free operation of pellet stoves is highly effective, creating enough heat to lower utility costs.

Pellet Stove Checklist

Are you planning to lower winter heating costs by installing a pellet stove in your home? The following is a handy checklist of considerations and questions to ask when buying a pellet stove:

□       Take the time necessary to ensure that the pellet stove you purchase fits your needs. The appliances are classified by the heat generated, whether high output or low output. The size of the unit is less important than both heat capacity and the size of the fuel hopper. Specialty retailers who sell pellet stoves are uniquely trained to help you choose the right pellet stove for your home.

□       Pellet stoves can be placed almost anywhere, partly because of the flexibility with venting. The slender chimneys can be installed through a wall, a ceiling, or in an existing masonry chimney.

□       Pellet stoves must be a certain distance from combustible materials and surfaces and must also be placed on a hearth pad or some other type of noncombustible surface.

□       Style choices of pellet stoves include a cast iron finish, a porcelain finish, and bay view doors and windows trimmed in black or gold.

□       There are three varieties of ignition systems that you can choose from when selecting a pellet stove: self-starting, in which a button is pushed to ignite the stove; fully automatic, in which a thermostat controls the stove’s operation; and standard, which requires the use of a match and starter gel.

□       Other optional features of a pellet stove include: self-cleaning burn pots, deep pedestal ash pans, self-cleaning glass, and a back-up power system. A small amount of electricity is required to operate a pellet stove, which means they are useful in a blackout only if hooked up to some type of backup system.

□       It is highly recommended that pellet stoves be installed by certified professional installers. A professional will ensure safety, obtain necessary building permits, and follow all local and state codes.

□       Wood pellets are available in premium and standard grades, and they are differentiated by the percentage of inorganic ash content. Pellets are not readily available in all parts of the country, however. The cost and associated pollution for transport of pellets may be an important consideration, depending on where you live.

□       In addition to the cost of the pellet stove, other costs include: chimney, hearth pad, delivery, installation, fuel costs, and annual maintenance.

□       In addition to recommended professional inspections by a professional each year, needed routine maintenance of pellet stoves includes periodically emptying the ash drawers and cleaning the glass, hopper, and burn pot.
