The Titanic Hearths and other Fireplaces Linked to Fame
All fireplaces provide a wonderful source of warmth when it’s chilly outside, but some also have chimney pieces that are truly outstanding. There is really no limit to the type of design you can use for a fireplace mantelpiece. Some great examples of unforgettable fireplaces follow, from hearths of the stars to fireplaces on the infamous Titanic.
Movie Star Fireplaces
How would you like to have an opulent or gorgeously tasteful chimney piece that is just like a movie star’s fireplace? The following are three examples, all of which could be “copied” by skilled builders and architects, using affordable materials.
Cher has an Old World-style chimney piece in her Malibu living room that may seem to be out of price range for the masses. But the fireplace could actually be duplicated using affordable materials, such as cast stone or glass fiber reinforced concrete.
If a truly unique and contemporary chimney piece is what you hope to build in your home, consider the geometric design which Anjelica Huston has in her home in Venice, California. The work could be replicated using basic drywall and framing skills.
Linda Ronstadt has a standout chimney piece with red tiles and beautiful embellishments in the living room of her Tucson, Arizona, home.
Fireplaces in Movies
Devout movie fans no doubt instantly recognize many of the fireplaces featured in favorite movies.
Perhaps one of the most impressive movie settings which included a standout fireplace was the Elrod House of Palm Springs, California, which was seen in Diamonds are Forever, a 1971 James Bond film. The design of the house is nothing short of amazing. The famous fireplace in the house which creates stunning visual effect has a circular sunburst concrete canopy. Many of the biggest movie stars frequented the home through the decades, including Bob Hope, Steve McQueen, and William Holden.
Many of the fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy have found inspiration for their own chimney pieces from the hearths in the hobbits’ homes. The most impressive fireplaces showcased in the movies belong to Frodo Baggins and Bilbo. The hobbit fireplaces have been emulated in many rustic homes and cottages.
A hearth scene that truly captures the essence of Christmas in the U.S. for believers in Santa Claus is in Home Alone, which stars Macaulay Culkin. Christmas stockings are hung all in a row on the classic fireplace mantel in this favorite seasonal film.
Fireplaces on the Titanic
The Titanic was an opulent ship, and fireplaces were among the most outstanding architectural features. Photos of the fireplace in the smoke room have been featured in many articles, and replicas of it have been featured in films. The ornate hearth is still a topic of discussion in architectural circles, and the interest is heightened partly because it was the only fully functional coal-burning hearth on the tragic vessel.
The smoke room fireplace on the Titanic was made with Italian marble and Mother of Pearl inlay. Second class gentlemen relaxed in the room after dinner, and many played card games. According to several accounts, the room must have had a welcoming feeling because men continued playing cards for several hours there even as the Titanic was sinking.
Underwater movie scenes of the fireplace in the room where Kate Winslet’s character modeled wearing nothing but jewelry for Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie The Titanic are also memorable.
